BAFAW VILLAGES

Njanga

The sun dips below the horizon, casting long shadows across the verdant landscape of Njanga, a village nestled amidst the rolling hills of the Bafaw region. Legend has it that Njanga owes its existence to the adventurous spirit of Ukawu Akama, a bold hunter who, while on a foraging expedition for his family in Dieka, stumbled upon this idyllic haven.

Njanga Village

Drawn by the abundance of nature, Ukawu was captivated by the sight of a serene lake surrounded by towering trees. These trees, known as "U'janga" in the vibrant Lifo language, were not merely timber; their bark was revered for its medicinal properties, used in the preparation of potent juju and powerful charms. The abundance of wildlife attracted by these trees further cemented Ukawu's decision to make this his home.

And so, Ukawu and his people settled, naming their newfound haven "U'janga" in honor of the majestic trees that had drawn them there. However, as fate would have it, the arrival of the Europeans brought about a subtle change. The unfamiliar tongue struggled to capture the essence of "U'janga," and the name was inadvertently transformed into "Njanga," a slight alteration that nonetheless preserved the essence of the village's origin.

Over the generations, Njanga flourished, its history intertwined with the lives of its people. Epongo Masango and Ngoh Akama, among other esteemed leaders, guided the village through times of prosperity and adversity, their legacies etched into the very fabric of Njanga's existence. The Babambaye, Bashibi, Bakum, and Mawukusa families, each with their unique traditions and customs, formed the bedrock of the community.

The arrival of the Germans brought a new wave of change. Along with their influence came a small contingent of Bamun migrants, who, over time, seamlessly integrated into the Bafaw community. Today, Njanga stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, a village where Bafaw traditions blend harmoniously with the influences of the past, creating a unique and vibrant tapestry of culture and community. Currently, Njanga is under the wise and experienced leadership of Nfon Samuel Penda, the esteemed chief who guides the village with unwavering dedication and a deep respect for its rich history.
